Spectacle Lenses
The optometrist will advise which type of lens is most suitable for you, taking into consideration your occupation and hobbies.
While you may take time and care to choose frames, your choice of lens material and coating can greatly affect the final appearance and comfort of your spectacles.
The majority of lenses dispensed today are plastic, CR39. As well as glass, there are also the options of polycarbonate or Trilogy materials (recommended for glazing rimless frames)

Spectacle Lenses > Single Vision
Single vision lenses are the simplest type as they consist of only one prescription: distance, intermediate or near.
Older patients may require more than one pair of single vision spectacles. Other options are bifocals and multifocals.

Spectacle Lenses > Bifocals
The ability to alter focus for near tasks decreases with age (presbyopia). If you normally wear distance spectacles, a second pair for reading may be inconvenient.
Bifocals correct two prescriptions within the one lens. This is generally the distance prescription with a near vision segment at the bottom for reading.
Some occupations may require a variation of this. eg. VDU user may require the intermediate prescription (for the screen) with a near vision segment (for paperwork). See VDU for further information.

Spectacle Lenses > Varifocals
Varifocals also combine distance and near prescriptions. But, unlike bifocals, there is no visible line on the lens resulting in better cosmetic appearance.
There is a smooth transition from the upper distance to the lower reading prescription resulting in a middle, intermediate prescription. The smooth progression of power in a varifocal lens can sometimes be tolerated better than the definite change that occurs in a bifocal lens.
There are many designs of varifocals available, some giving larger reading or intermediate areas, and some more suitable for first-time wearers than others.

Spectacle Lenses > Multiple Anti-Reflection
Light reflected from your spectacle lenses can be very annoying: to yourself - from indoor lighting and at night from street lights and car headlights; to the observer - they detract from the appearance of your spectacles and hide your eyes.
An anti-reflection coating is a thin layer deposited on the surface of the lens. For a greater reduction in reflectance multiple layers are commonly used.
Anti-reflection coatings are particularly recommended for those with high prescriptions and high index lenses, VDU users and drivers.

Spectacle Lenses > Thinner & Lighter
If you have a high prescription, you can improve the appearance of your spectacles with thinner, lighter lenses.
Your lenses can be made thinner by using a different material (higher refractive index) or aspheric design, or both. The higher the index, the thinner and lighter the lens.
High index materials tend to be more reflective, therefore, an anti-reflection coating is advised and sometimes standard on these lenses.
